Generic terminology for pulpmotion5/28/2023 ![]() ![]() In the team approach to implant treatment the referral base of a practioner often requires the knowledge of many implant systems. A recent survey indicated that more than 90 % of oral and maxillofacial surgeons, periodontists, and prosthodontists and more than 50 % of general dentists have attended an implant course during the previous 3 years.2 Most of this education process has been manufacture-sponsored and oriented toward the use of a specific implant system instead of the theory and comprehensive practice of implant dentistry.3 With the ever-increasing number of manufacturers entering the implant field, the names of many implant components have become confusing and unique to a particular system, with several terms or abbreviations describing the same basic components. This is reflected in the tenfold increase in the number of dentists involved in implantology from 1983 to 1987.l The 1988 National Institutes of Health consensuspanel on dental implants recognized that implant restorative procedures differ from those in traditional dentistry and stressed the necessity for advanced education. He use of dental implants in the treatment of complete and partial edentulism has become an integral modality in restorative dentistry. A generic terminology for endosseous root-form prosthodontics is presented that allows effective communication between members of the profession. Fortunately, a prosthetic continuity exists between most implant systems. The ever-increasing number of implant systems has made the names of many implant components product-unique and confusing. ![]() Most practitioners have been educated by manufacturer-sponsored courses oriented to the use of a specific implant system. Implant dentistry has become an integral treatment modality in the restoration of the complete and partially edentulous patient. ![]()
